GENERAL INFO

Historical sources provide us with information of the brewery called “De Kerkdijk” which existed about 300 years ago. It translates to “The Kerkdijk” in English, which is a dike in the southern Netherlands meant to serve as a final barrier against water in case other safety measures fail. It was owned and run by the De Moorrees family, however this changed when in 1764 the children of a De Moorrees daughter and a Swinkels son inherited the brewery and their descendants run it to this day.

Much of the size and importance of the brewery has changed though.

The company has proceeded to expand over the Wilhelmina-canal built in 1923 and has switched to ale as their main product (1925), which paved their way to a profitable future and established their reputation as an innovative and consistently successful company. Furthermore, the owners built their own malt house (1939) and mineral water supply (1992), providing them with the advantage of owning and controlling the whole production chain. This factor allowed the brewery to survive and prosper after the Second World War.

Today they own one of the largest malt houses in the world, produce and distribute internationally and constitute serious competition for Heineken, being the Netherlands’ largest brewing company.
